Kerala cardinal asks youths to witness to faith

Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil of Ernakulam has released the logo of the 2011 World Youth Day in Kochi urging young people to practice the faith and justice in society.

“In today’s world moral values are degraded. Youth must be the bearers of faith. Youths have a moral obligation to bring back the youth to the right track by their faith witness,” the crdinal said.

He said the Catholic youths also have a responsibility practice the faith and justice in society and witnesses to the message of Christ.

The pilgrimage of World Youth Day in Madrid, Spain, next year would inspire the youth to lead “a faithful and committed life in the Church and society,” he said.

The ailing cardinal, who has not been attending public functions for some time, released the logo before a select gathering of youth leaders and officials inside his residence in Kochi.

Deepak Cherkott, state president of Kerala Catholic Youth Movement, presided the meeting. Movement’s director Father Jaison Kollannur delivered the introductory speech.

Others present at the function include state World youth Day coordinator Jaimon Vellappally, Indina Catholic Youth Movement General Secretary Joice Mary Antony, its representative Godfrey Henry, former state president Thomson Chiriyankandath, State Assistant Director Sister Ancy Antony and state vice president Anitha Andrew.
