Kolkata dances, prays for Mother Teresa
Published Date: September 14, 2010

About 2,000 people attended a four-hour long cultural extravaganza in Kolkata on Sept. 12, marking the culmination of first phase of Mother Teresa’s birth centenary celebrations in the city.

Over 500 students, associates and professionals of Kolkata presented songs and danced in more than a dozen programs that depicted the values that Blessed Teresa of Kolkata lived by.

The Catholic Association of Bengal in collaboration with the Missionaries of Charity (MC) congregation organized the celebrations. Some 600 MC nuns attended the programs.

Dipika Das, who choreographed and danced in one of the programs, said it was a rare opportunity for her to join other dancers, mostly girls brought up in MC homes, to pay tribute to Mother Teresa.

Das has been a resident of Shanti Dan, an MC home for mentally disabled and abused women, for the past 20 years. She is specialized in Bharatanatyam, an Indian classical dance form.

In another more prayerful program, people from various faiths gathered on Sept. 10 at the tomb of Mother Teresa in Kolkata to mark her “inspiration day” when she heard a call from God to devote her life to the poor.

Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Zoroastrians read from their holy books and paid glowing tribute to the nun during the interreligious program that Calcutta archdiocese organized.

Mother Teresa, born on Aug. 26, 1910, in what is now Macedonia came to Kolkata at the age of 19 to become a Loreto nun. She later left that congregation and in 1950 started her own Missionaries of Charity congregation in Kolkata to serve the poor. She died in that city in 1997 at the age of 87 and was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2003.
