Punjab church attacked following Quran desecration
Published Date: September 14, 2010

A church was attacked in Malerkotla, the only Muslim majority town in the Punjab state of India, following rumors of desecration of Quran in the US, reports said.

Police imposed curfew after angry mobs setting fire to furniture and damaging sections of the religious premises late on Sunday night.

Tension started following rumors that Pastor Terry Jones in Florida went ahead with his threat of burning the holy book on the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attack in Ne York city, the report said.

Some reports said about what created trouble was rumors that Quran had been defiled in Michigan, US.

A rapidly growing mob of local people collected outside Malerkotla’s mosque and then marched on the town’s only Christian church where they proceeded to torch furniture and attempted to demolish parts of the building, Asian Age reported.

The mob raised slogans against the United States government for failing to protect the religious freedoms of the Muslims.

Police reinforcement from nearby Sangrur city restored peace after several hours, when local Muslim and Christian leaders issued a joint appeal for peace.

Punjab police vehicles were deployed to broadcast the peace call through the night and well into Monday, the report said.

Deputy inspector general Jitendra Jain described the situation as “peaceful.” He said a large contingent of armed police and senior officials are camping at Malerkotla to ensure peace.

Meanwhile, a communal situation was averted in the industrial city of Ludhiana after police intervened to dissuade local Christians and Muslims.

Members of the Christian community blocked traffic outside the Cavalry Church following reports of the violence at Malerkotla.

Locals also began collecting at the main mosque forcing the Ludhiana district administration to impose prohibitory orders through most of the industrial city.
