Archbishop Salvatore  pennacchio

The new Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, reached New Delhi on the 10th of May 2010. He was accorded a warm welcome from the officials of India’s three Catholic Rites when he arrived in New Delhi.

Italian Archbishop Pennacchio, 57, was named on May 8, 2010 to succeed Archbishop Pedro López Quintana as the Apostolic Nuncio for India and Nepal..

“I have come to India for the first time and will work in communion with the Churches in India,” the Nuncio said on his arrival.

The new Nuncio was born at Marano (Naples) in Italy on the 7th of September 1952. He was ordained a priest on the 18th of September 1976. He holds a Doctorate in Philosophy. He entered into the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See on the 15th of April, 1979. He served in the Apostolic Nunciature in Panama, Ehiopia, Australia, Turkey, Egypt, Yugoslavia and Ireland.

Later Archbishop Pennacchio has been Apostolic Nuncio to Thailand, Singapore and Cambodia, and Apostolic Delegate to Myanmar, Laos, Malaysia and Brunei for the past seven years.

Major Archbishop Baselios Mar Cleemis of the Syro-Malankara rite, Bishop Gratian Mundadan, Apostolic Visitator for the Syro-rite to Delhi and Latin-rite Archbishop Vincent Concessao of Delhi met the new Nuncio at the airport. Also present was Brother Mani Mekkunnel from the Conference of Religious India, the association for Relgious priests, brothers and sisters of India.

The Nuncio will begin his official work as Ambassador of the Holy See after presenting his credentials to Mrs. Pratibha Patil, the Honorable President of India.
